[Also in Division C3] The invention comprises phosphonates of the general formula in which R and R1, which may be the same or different, are ethylene groups or ethylene groups substituted with alkyl or haloalkyl substituents, at least one of R and R1 being an ethylene group substituted with a haloalkyl substituent, R 2 and R 3 are C 2 -C 10 alkylene groups and m and m1 are integers from 1 to 10. They may be obtained by reacting a phosphite of the formula with formaldehyde and a dialkanol amine of the formula HN(R2OH)(R3OH), the reaction being generally effected at 0‹ to 100‹ C., preferably 25 to 70‹ C. The products are useful for the production of flame-resistant polyurethanes by reaction with organic polyisocyanates.
