Production of a polymer electrolyte membrane electrode arrangement comprises applying an ion conducting membrane (4) to a substrate (1) to form an electrode-membrane composite body (ME). An ion conducting polymer is used as the membrane in which a metal-containing gel hydrolyzed and/or condensed from a metal alkoxide starting material and/or is chemically bound to the polymer. Preferred Features: A membrane having a thickness of 5-15 microns is used. A carbon-containing layer is applied to the substrate on a first surface (2) before the membrane is applied to the first surface. The metal alkoxide is tetraethoxysilane.
