METHOD FOR MANUFACTURING OPTICAL FIBER

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for decreasing the fluctuations in the axial direction of the diameter of the core in a longitudinal direction by strictly controlling an average valve of the core in manufacture of an optical fiber. SOLUTION: This method includes a step of manufacturing a precursor from an intermediate glass body and a step of forming a fiber from the precursor. The method further includes a step of determining the diameter d (z) of a core region relating to the coordinated in the longitudinal direction of the intermediate glass body and a step of elongating the glass body according to d (z) and forming the fiber from the precursor, then forming the fiber in such a manner that the diameter of the core of the fiber does not essentially depend upon the coordinates in the longitudinal direction of the fiber.
