PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a diphosphine oxide and a diphosphonate being intermediates for producing a diphosphine compound useful as a ligand of a metal complex which is an asymmetric reaction catalyst simply in a high yield safely. SOLUTION: A phosphine compound of general formula (2) (R1 is a 1-4C alkyl group, a cycloalkyl group, a phenyl group, a substituted phenyl group, a naphthyl group which may be substituted with a 1-4C alkyl group or a 1-4C alkoxy group, a 1-4C alkoxy group, a phenyloxy group or a substituted phenyloxy group) is treated with a base and then reacted with an oxidizing metal compound suspended in a nonpolar solvent and dimerized to give a diphosphine oxide and a diphosphonate of general formula (1) (R1 is as shown above).
