PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sand filtering and flocculation type liquid purifying apparatus for purifying wastewater containing fine particles, heavy metal ions or the like such as a plating waste liquid or the like. SOLUTION: A granular adsorbent 5 consisting of at least basic magnesium sulfate and magnesium hydroxide is arranged in a purifying container 1 and a liquid to be purified is passed through the gaps formed in the bed of the granular adsorbent not only to flocculate fine particles in the liquid to be purified to form large flocs but also to bond heavy metal ions in the liquid to be purified with the hydroxyl group of the adsorbent to solidify them and these solidified particles are flocculated to form large flocs. The above-mentioned large flocs are subjected to sand filtering type purification by the gaps formed in the bed of the granular adsorbent.
