In a machine tool, such as a lathe, in which a cutting tool acts on the periphery of a workpiece rotating about an axis therethrough there is provided a tool setting device 39 for setting the initial position of the cutting tool and for indicating tool wear, the device being mountable on a tool post 17 adjacent the cutting tool 16 and comprises a slide 47 supporting a sliding member 41 which carries a locating arm 40 against which the tool is set and which is pivotable away from the tool cutting edge during cutting operations. The arm 40 is adjustable within a sleeve member 42 in the member 41 and its position in the sleeve is indicated by a pneumatic gauge P 2 , any later adjustment of the arm necessitated by tool wear for example, by the release of a clamping screw 44 being subsequently registered by the gauge P 2 . Further gauges P3 and P4 are provided and mounted on the tool slide 15 on the opposite side of the workpiece, the gauge P3 effecting measurement of the workpiece diameter and gauge P4 effecting indication of the longitudinal traverse of the tool within predetermined positions along the workpiece. A further gauge P1 is provided and carried by a compound slide portion 18 of the tool slide 15 and indicates the position of the tool post 17 relative to the tool slide. The gauges P1 and P3 are connected, in opposition, to a pneumatic summator 34 and when the tool post 17 with the cutting tool 16 correctly set and the workpiece correctly positioned to attain the required diameter the pressure from gauge P1 equals that from P3. Pressure indicators 36a, 36b, 36c responding to the pressures in the gauges P1, P2 and P3 respectively are connected in the pressure lines to the summator 34 and errors in diameter and traverse are indicated in on null gauges 33, 35 respectively. Once the desired size has been set by the positioning of the gauges and is indicated on a digital display member 32 the operator has merely to maintain the readings on gauges 33 and 35 to zero. |
