Diallyl and alkyl-substituted diallyl are prepared by reacting one or more allyl chlorides of formula where each R is H or C 1-4 alkyl, with zinc in the presence of a hexaalkylphosphotriamide of formula OP[N(R) 2 ] 3 where R is alkyl. An initiator may be present, e.g. iodine, an alkyl or allyl iodide, or an organo-zinc compound of the alkyl-zinc or allyl-zinc halide type. Examples relate to the production of diallyl (i.e. 1,5 - hexadiene), 2,7 - dimethyl - 2,6- octadiene, 2,5 - dimethyl - 1,5 - hexadiene, and a mixture of diallyl, 2-methyl-2,6-heptadiene and 2,7-dimethyl-2,6-octadiene. |
