A method of preparing a phosphor of formula (R 1-x Eu x ) 4 M 4 O 12 wherein R is Y and/or Gd, M is Ga and/or A1 and x is 0À005#x#0À1, preferably 0À01#x#0À05 comprises firing the starting mixture in an oxidizing atmosphere (e.g. air) in the range 1300‹ to 1400‹ C. The starting materials may be oxides or materials readily convertible to same on heating and the compounds of Eu and Y and/or Gd may be initially dissolved in nitric acid, oxalic acid added and the coprecipitate fired at 600‹ C. The phosphor is of the garnet structure and emits red, reddish-orange or yellowish-red light when excited by U.V. (2537 A‹) or electrons, and Hg vapour lamp and c.r.t. applications are instanced. |
