PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the nonuniformity of the thickness of a film formed by intermittently applying a coating material on a base material and the thick coating at the starting edge part, which are caused in the conventional intermittent coating device. SOLUTION: This intermittent coating device is provided with a nozzle 1 for applying the coating material 6 on the base material, a supply side two way valve 10 for repeating the supplying and the stopping of the coating material 6 to a flow passage 12 of the coating material, a return side two way valve 11 for repeating the discharge and the stopping of the coating material 6 to the return side, the flow passage 12 of the coating material, a supply means for supplying the coating material 6 to the flow passage 12 and a coating material withdrawing means 5 for repeating the sucking and the returning of the coating material 6 inside the nozzle 1 by the movement of a piston 501 provided inside the nozzle 1 and at least the switching of the supply side two way valve 10 in the starting of the coating is operated in the range of 5 to 100 msec earlier than the switching of the return side two way valve 11.
