PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the poor wear resistance which is the weak point inherent to copper while maintaining the high thermal conductivity of the copper. SOLUTION: The cooler is a stave made of copper or copper alloy for cooling the furnace casing of a blast furnace. A hard facing layer 12 of >=200 in Vickers hardness and >=3 mm in thickness is formed on the in-furnace surface side of the stave 11. Accordingly, the life of the blast furnace is made longer by accompanying the longer life of the stave. Since the downtime required for the replacement of the broken stave is reduced, a contribution may be made to an improvement in operating efficiency.
