The invention provides a head support apparatus. The apparatus may for example be used for ophthalmic examination. In some embodiments, the apparatus may allow six degrees of freedom of motion during initial positioning of a patient's head (234), and may then be locked to hold the patient's head in place precisely. The head support mechanism may include three shafts (10A, 10B, 10C) connecting an upper frame (17) to a structure. Each shaft (10A, 10B, 10C) may be provided with a ball-and-socket joint (20A, 20B, 20C) at one end and a lockable bearing assembly (25A, 25B, 25C) on the other end. The lockable bearing assembly (25A, 25B, 25C) may provide a combination of sliding and pivotal movement. A biasing assembly (35) may be provided to support each shaft (10A, 10B, 10C), and to return each shaft (10A, 10B, 10C) to a self-centred and fully lifted rest position. A head clamping apparatus (15) is also disclosed comprising pivoting clamping arms (210, 212) and an adjustable chin rest (224). |
