[Also in Divisions C3 and Dl] Stockings are given improved resistance to running, snagging and picking by applying thereto an aqueous emulsion of a cross-linkable copolymer of an acrylate and a copolymerizable compound such that the copolymer has carboxy groups, epoxy groups or methylol groups of the formula -CHR'OR" in which R' and R" are hydrogen or alkyl groups having up to four carbon atoms, and subjecting the copolymer to textile resin curing conditions to obtain cross-linked soft resilient coating on the stockings. The acrylate in the polymer may be an alkyl acrylate having up to 12 carbon atoms. Suitable monomers which may be copolymerised with the acrylates are N-methylol acrylamides or methacrylamides, glycidyl acrylate or acrylic or methacrylic acid. Further monomers which may be used to form the copolymer include acrylic anhydride, glycol esters of acrylic or methacrylic acid and acrylamide. The treating composition may also contain a catalyst, e.g. magnesium chloride, zinc nitrate, zinc fluoroborate, monoethanolamine hydrochloride, 2-amino-2-methyl-propanol nitrate, sodium or potassium carbonate, bicarbonate or phosphate, sodium silicate, barium carbonate or lauryl trimethyl ammonium hydroxide or carbonate. The emulsion may be applied to the stockings by dipping or spraying and the treated stockings then dried and cured. Stockings comprising wool, nylon, synthetic protein, polyester, cotton, viscose rayon, or cellulose acetate fibres may be treated and after dipping in the aqueous emulsion they may be dried, boarded and heated at 240‹-260‹F preferably using steam. Stockings made from textured yarns may be treated.
