A hand held illuminated magnifying device for examining the anterior segment of the eye and peri-ocular tissues having a head (10) bearing a convex magnifying lens (13) and an observer's eye cup (12) is held in close proximity to the eye to be examined with the compressible rim (11) around the head's open end in contact with the peri-orbital skin. The contoured open rim is shaped to allow correct lens positioning and is cut away (16) to allow digital retraction of the patient's eye lids by the examiner. The compressible rim accomodates variations in anatomy and is removeable a llowing instrument use without skin contact. The head forms a closed system when in position excluding most ambient light. Internal illumination is provided by circuits of white and blue light emitting diodes within the instrument head powered by batteries contained within the handle (17). |
