In an automatic voltage control system for a road vehicle of the type in which the field winding 22 of an alternator 11 is controlled by a transistor 21 to regulate the rectified alternator output voltage supplied to a battery 14 and in which a transistor 17 oscillates in an on/off manner with off/on oscillation of the transistor 21, the voltage responsive device comprises the base-emitter diode of the transistor 17 whose characteristics are chosen so that oscillation (and hence regulation) commences at a predetermined output voltage below which the transistor 21 is maintained on by current flow through diodes 31 and a resistor 18. A thermistor 27 may be arranged to compensate for temperature variation or to vary the regulated voltage in accordance with temperature. Members 26, 27 may be shunted by another resistorthermistor combination responsive to the temperature of a vehicle component such as the battery or the generator. The invention may be applied to a generator comprising a dynamo and cut-out.
