A substrate (A) having reactive functions involves contacting (A) with a difunctional reactive compound (I), consisting of two reactive groups separated by a rigid fragment, such that (I) becomes grafted onto (A) to provide covalently bonded reactive groups. Treatment of a substrate (A) having reactive functions involves contacting (A) with a difunctional reactive compound of formula X-R-Y' (I), such that (I) becomes grafted onto (A) to provide (A) with covalently bonded reactive groups Y'. The product is optionally contacted with a reactant (II) having a function which reacts with the introduced reactive groups to form a covalent bond, (II) also including a group which provides a required property or modifies or improves a property: R = rigid fragment; X = reactive group which can react with a reactive function of (A) to form a covalent bond; and Y' = reactive group. The product is optionally contacted with a reactant (II) having a function which reacts with Y' to form a covalent bond, (II) also including a group which provides (A) with a required property or modifies or improves a property already present in (A). An Independent claim is included for the grafted reactive substrate provided with reactive groups Y' by covalent bonding of (I) using the above process.
