The irradiated products are stored in storage locations such as tubular channels which are arranged in parallel and substantially horizontal positions in racks (17), cooling air passing through these racks. The storage building (12) contains a plurality of modules (13a, 13b) which are separated from each other by concrete walls and in which sets of storage racks (17) are arranged. Each module (13a, 13b) comprises a loading bay (24) in which a loading machine moves around (19). Each module (13a, 13b) also communicates with a handling gallery (14) in which a transport means (34), such as an overhead-travelling crane moves around, through openings (20') which can be closed by insulating doors (20). The fuel assemblies, which are preferably placed inside closed, sealed containers filled with inert gas, are placed on the loading machines (19) in the handling gallery (14) by the overhead-travelling crane (34). The rack channels (17) are loaded and unloaded by the loading machines (19), inside each of the storage modules (13a, 13b). The inventive storage installation provides a means of storing a very large number of fuel assemblies in a desired number of modules (13a, 13b) which are entirely separate from each other during storage and which are serviced by a handling machine. |
