The invention relates to a method for the removal of trihydroxymethylpropyl formate from trihydroxymethylpropane, as produced by the hydrogenation of a 2,2-dimethylalkanal. An effective removal of said formate may be achieved by drying the raw solution of trihydroxymethylpropane, obtained from the hydrogenation and addition of ammonia, or primary and secondary amines in anhydrous form.
