Apparatus for removing material from a workpiece (102) is described, in which the apparatus comprises means (112) for advancing an abrasive tool (100) towards said workpiece (102) to bring an abrasive surface of the tool (100) into contact with the surface of the workpiece (102), means (104, 106) for moving said abrasive surface relative to the workpiece (102) to remove material from the workpiece M(102), means for detecting a load applied to said tool by said workpiece, and means (118) for controlling the rate of advancement of the abrasive tool towards the workpiece depending on the magnitude of the detected load.
