PURPOSE: Provided is a method for inhibiting the growth of microorganisms and marine organisms at a locus. In particular, certain 5-carboxanilido-haloalkylthiazoles are used for as antimicrobial and marine antifouling agents. CONSTITUTION: The method of inhibiting the growth of microorganisms at a locus subject to microbial attack, comprises introducing to the locus an antimicrobially effective amount of at least one antimicrobial agent of the formula(1), wherein R1 is (C1-C2)haloalkyl or (C1C5)alkyl; R2 is (C1-C5)alkyl or (C1-C2)haloalkyl; each R is independently halo, halo(C1-C5)alkyl, halo(C1-C5)alkoxy, nitro, cyano, pentahalosulfur, halomethylthio, haloethylthio, (C1-C2)alkylsulfinyl, halo(C1-C2)alkylsulfinyl, (C1-C2)alkylsulfonyl, or halo(C1-C2)alkylsulfonyl; n is from one to five; and its microbicidal acceptable salts; and provided that at least one of R1 and R2 is a (C1-C2)haloalkyl.
