PURPOSE: A control method of sleep mode operation for an air conditioner is provided to operate the pleasant sleep mode by deciding cooling or heating of operation every four hours in the sleep mode and newly beginning the sleep operation in changing operation mode. CONSTITUTION: A key input signal according to cooling or heating operation mode is detected in an air conditioner divided into an indoor unit and an outdoor unit(S1). The air conditioner is operated with increasing to the desired temperature after the predetermined time in setting cooling operation mode from the key input signal(S2-S3), and with decreasing to the desired temperature in setting heating operation mode from the key input signal(S5-S6). The sleep mode is operated according to cooling or heating operation, and sleep operation is performed according to cooling or heating operation with deciding operation mode again after the elapsed time.
