The method involves applying a first sinusoidal signal having a predetermined frequency to the battery, which generates an alternating current component superimposed on the direct current; eliminating the direct component of the response signal; applying a second periodic current signal having a frequency that is identical to the first signal and performing synchronous detection of the alternating component generated as a result of applying said first signal in order to obtain a voltage that is proportional to the electrochemical impedance and evaluate the state of health and charge of the battery.
