The invention relates to a method and to a device for controlling an internal combustion engine that is provided with an air system. At least one value that characterizes the air system is determined by means of a model, on the basis of at least one correcting variable and/or at least one measured variable that characterizes the condition of the ambient air. The inventive model comprises at least one first and one second submodel. The starting values are determined by means of a submodel on the basis of input values. The correcting variable and/or the measured variable, in addition to at least one starting value of a second submodel, are taken into account for the input values of the first submodel.
