PURPOSE: An in plane switching(IPS) mode liquid crystal display(LCD) is provided to display a high brightness and a medium gray region stably. CONSTITUTION: An array substrate(111) for an LCD has a switching device(T) in each pixel, and the switching device is a thin film transistor(T) constituted with a gate electrode(113) and a source electrode(115) and a drain electrode(117). The gate electrode is connected with a gate line crossing the substrate horizontally, and the source electrode is connected with a data line crossing the substrate vertically. A gate line(131) and a data line(133) corresponds one to one to define a pixel region(P), and a common electrode(135) and a pixel electrode(137) are formed on the pixel region. The common electrode is formed on the same layer and with the same material as the gate line and is independent of the gate line electrically. The pixel electrode is formed on the same layer as the source electrode and the data line, and can be formed by depositing and patterning an ITO or IZO on the drain electrode with an intervening insulation layer. The pixel electrode can be formed by contacting the drain electrode through a drain contact hole formed by etching the insulation layer on the drain electrode. The pixel electrode and the common electrode comprise a number of vertical patterns(137b,135b) and a number of horizontal patterns(137a,135a).
