摘要 PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for checking parity bits in a data communication system are provided which is able to check the parity of data having the length of 2¬n bits only during n repeated loops to reduce the time required for checking the parity. CONSTITUTION: A parity bit checking apparatus includes the first and second temporary storage registers for storing data to be checked or an exclusive-ORed result, a shifter for shifting the value stored in the first temporary storage register by bits corresponding to half the length of the data to be checked or exclusive-ORed result value, and a logic device for exclusive-ORing the values respectively stored in the first and second temporary storage registers. The apparatus further has a controller that checks the length of the data and determines the number of repetition of a loop to store the exclusive-ORed result in the first and second temporary storage registers, and performs parity checking process for the data according to the final storage values of the temporary storage resisters when exclusive-ORing processes as many as the number of repetition of the loop is finished.
