PURPOSE: A hydraulic lash adjuster is provided to improve the output of an engine and to promote acceleration performance by increasing a lift of an intake valve. CONSTITUTION: A lash adjuster(1) includes a plunger(5) having a low pressure chamber(10) and contacting to a rocker arm(2), a body(6) forming a high pressure chamber(11), a check ball(12) opening and closing the pressure chambers, a plunger spring(15) supporting the check ball, a secondary high pressure chamber(17) formed by a partition(16), an oil path(18) formed along the plunger wall face to be communicated with the high pressure chamber, and a rod(19) lifting up the rocker arm by the hydraulic pressure applied to the secondary high pressure chamber. In the high-speed operation or sudden start of an engine, oil pressure increases remarkably. Then, the rod lifts up the rocker arm and a lift degree of a valve(4) increases. Thus, opening degree of an intake valve increases and a large quantity of intake air flows into a cylinder. Thus, engine output increases and acceleration performance is improved.
