1160566 Electric solid state devices GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 25 Oct 1966 [8 Nov 1965] 47787/66 Headings H1A A5 A8 and A4D A laminated super-conductor tape comprises an inner super-conductor laminate with its major faces bonded at elevated temperature to outer laminae of non-superconducting metal of greater coefficient of thermal expansion so that on cooling, the outer laminae stress the inner super-conductor laminate into compression to provide a strong flexible structure for winding into coils. The outer laminate also assists in heat dissipation. The superconductor may consist of Nb 3 Sn formed by heattreating a tin coated niobium strip with an outer laminate of copper; a second outer layer of steel or nickel may also be provided. A process of manufacture is described Fig. 4 in which 3 strips 30 of Nb containing a small amount of Zr are fed into tin baths 31 and reaction chambers 32 containing oxygen to provide regions of Nb3Sn with dispersed zirconia and the tapes are then fed between copper tapes 34 into soldering bath 35 and finally wound into coil 36. Other materials suitable for super-conductors are tantalum, technetium and vanadium possibly reacted with metals such as aluminium, gallium and silicon; other materials suitable for the outer laminates are aluminium, gold, platinum and silver. |
