PURPOSE: A shift lever assembly of an automatic transmission is provided to light on a backup lamp only when a shift lever is set in a R range by a driver who wants to reverse a vehicle. CONSTITUTION: If a push button(4) is pressed, a hooking rod(10) is separated from the hooking groove of a hooking plate(8) such that a shift lever(2) is freely operated. Then, if the shift lever is positioned on a place which a driver wants and the push button is released, the hooking rod is hooked to the hooking groove of the hooking plate, thereby locking shift range. Further, if the shift lever is moved to a R range and the push button is released, the hooking rod is hooked to the R range hooking groove of the hooking plate. Then, a backup switch mounted inside the R range hooking groove is grounded and electricity is applied to a backup lamp. Thus, the life of the backup lamp is enlarged and the lamp is lighten on only when the driver wants.
