PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for detecting a traveling state in a new tea ridge striding and traveling type tea garden tending machine, capable of detecting the traveling state such as travel speed, travel distance, etc., from the flow rate of hydraulic oil supplied from a hydraulic pump so as to drive a traveling body. SOLUTION: This method for detecting the traveling state is characterized in that in an apparatus obtained by attaching a tending machine body 3 to a traveling machine body 2 to be traveled and driven by a hydraulic motor and carrying out proper tea garden tending operations such as plucking operation, pruning operation, fertilizing/prevention operation, etc., while grounding and traveling between a tea ridge T, the flow rate of a hydraulic oil supplied from hydraulic pumps 19A and 19B so as to drive traveling bodies 12A and 12B are measured by flowmeters 21A and 21B of turbine type equipped with rotary encoders and the traveling velocity, the travel distance, etc., of the tending machine are detected from the measured values.
