PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To protect read/write over different applications by storing a data value in a programmable electrical fuse. SOLUTION: A fuse is divided into a plurality of fuse chains 62, 64, 66 or a sub-chains 68, comprising protective fuse cells 70, 74 and at least one data fuse cell 72. A control logic circuit 60 can address the fuse and supplies the chain or sub-chain with a control signal for loading data values in series and testing, programming and reading out the data values. An optional write protection fuse cell 72 is programmed to inhibit programming of subsequent fuses. An optional read protection fuse cell 74 is programmed to inhibit reading of preceding fuses. The data fuse cell 72 has an output readable for a host unit.
