METHOD FOR INCREASING STRESS RESISTANCE OF PLANT BY SUPPRESSING PROLINE-SPLITTING SYSTEM

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for increasing the stress resistance of a plant through suppressing the expression of a gene encoding an enzyme in the proline- splitting system of the plant, and to provide a molecule intended for suppressing the above expression. SOLUTION: A plant suppressed in expression of the gene encoding a proline dehydrogenase(ProDH) as one of enzymes involved in the proline-splitting system is created by making an anti-sense transformant. The plant thus produced is increased in proline content and significantly raised in stress resistance including freeze resistance and salinity tolerance.
