PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an arrester having a reinforced surge rating without use of a large size and expensive gas type arc gap. SOLUTION: An arrester for protecting an electric circuit from a transient over-voltage is provided with at least one protection element consisting of a gas type arc gap. In this arrester, a pair of gas type arc gaps (2a to 2c) connected in parallel are provided and these arc gaps individually have the surge current ratings lower than the desired surge current ratings.
