PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem, in which when strong light rays are incident on a solid-state image pickup device to generate charges by photoelectric conversion, the charges are diffused to penetrate into an adjacent photodiode getting over an element isolating region, and it turns into spurious signals called 'color mixture' or the diffused charge penetrates into a CCD getting over a charge read-out region or an element isolation region, it turns into spurious signals called 'smears', and these spurious signals degrade the image quality. SOLUTION: Minority carriers, generated by photoelectric conversion in an element isolating region 3 or a semiconductor region of the same conductivity-type with the region 3, are elongated in effective diffusion length by a groove 10 provided to the element isolation region 3, so that there is no path which serves as a rectilinear byway for minority carries, spurious signals hardly flow into adjacent cells, and as a result, the smears or color mixture can be restrained.
