PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a 1/2 wavelength plate for polarizing beam splitter, which can exhibit a high optical performance with a low cost and wide band, and its production method. SOLUTION: A 1/2 wavelength plate 15 is mounted on a polarizing beam splitter 14 formed by laminating plural sheets of glass, cutting them at an inclination of 45 degrees. Natural light (i) from a light source 12 is made incident on the polarizing beam splitter 14. P polarized light (ip) passes the polarizing beam splitter 14 as it is, S polarized light (is) repeats reflection on boundary faces of the glass, and is emitted as S polarized light (is), and a long-sized P polarized light (ip) and the S polarized light (is) are emitted. The 1/2 wavelength plate 15 consists of an effective area 15A which functions as a phase difference plate, and a transit area 15B which passes light as it is, converts the P polarized light (ip) into the S polarized light (is) in the effective area 15A, and passes and emits the S polarized light (is) as it is in the transit area 15B. Thereby, all of natural light is converted into S polarized light, and light can be used effectively.
