PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically switch the modes of printing head drive wave-forms and mitigate a load which a CPU of a printer has to bear to cut down a throughput by counting the number of times of head drive by each of the drive wave-forms. SOLUTION: A head drive part 16 counts the number of times of head drive by each of the drive wave-forms with the help of downcounters 19a, 19b, 19c. When each of the counters 19a, 19b, 19c counts the specified number of times of head drive, a mode selector 18d switches the modes of the head drive wave- forms. In addition, a mode selection and interruption controller 19e outputs a specified interruption demand to the CPU 7 in accordance with the modes. Thus interruption to the CPU 7 each time only for the purpose of counting the number of times of printing is no longer necessary and thereby the mitigation of the load upon the CPU and the cutting of print throughput are achieved.
