PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain an apparatus for detecting the remaining amount of rolled paper and the type thereof with a simple structure. SOLUTION: Marking members 34a, 34b are provided on the side surface of the rolled paper. A first mark (reference mark) 36, and a plurality of second marks (identification mark) 37a-37e of numbers depending on the type of the rolled paper are attached onto the marking members 34a, 34b. When the rolled paper housed in a paper storage is rotated at the time of printing, a sensor reads the first mark 36 and the second marks 37a-37e on the marking members 34a, 34b. The remaining amount of the rolled paper is determined based on the reading cycle of the first mark 36, and the type of the rolled paper is discriminated based on the number of the second marks 37a-37e read in the period. A simple detector consisting of the mark attached on the rolled paper and the sensor for reading the mark can detect the remaining amount of the rolled paper and the type thereof at the same time.
