PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To extremely easily retrieve a desired character string without necessity to input any character string to be retrieved on an electronic dictionary by a key operation in an electronic equipment having a communicating function with an electronic dictionary. SOLUTION: A desired word is range-designated as a word to be retrieved and displayed X so as to be inverted on the text screen of an English sentence displayed at a display part 13 of a personal computer 10, and when the retrieval of a dictionary is instructed by operating a search instruction area 13c, the word data to be retrieved are transmitted through infrared data communication IrDA to an electronic dictionary 20, and the dictionary contents of the word to be retrieved which is received from the personal computer 10 is retrieved by an English/Japanese dictionary data stored in the electronic dictionary 20, and displayed at a display 22 of the electronic dictionary 20, or transmitted to the personal computer 10 as response data, and window-displayed W at the display part 13.
