SOLUTION: Exhaust sample gas is sampled so that a ratio to the exhaust gas from an engine 1 is preset at a division ratio, the exhaust sample gas is diluted and cooled by a dilution gas in a dilution tank 6 to make diluted mixture gas, when an amount of a particulate substance in the exhaust gas from the amount of the particulate substance separated by a separation means 8 from the diluted mixture gas is measured, the division ratio is maintained constantly by determining the dilution ratio of the diluted mixture gas to the exhaust sample gas by a dilution ratio determining means 11 in consideration of at least a temperature difference between the exhaust sample gas and the diluted mixture gas, and the amount of the particulate substance in the exhaust gas is measured.
