PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a tren derivative having a structure with a variety of many functional groups introduced therein, preferably a water-soluble tren derivative. SOLUTION: This tren derivative or the water-soluble tren derivative has 200-20,000 weight average molecular weight, and has the structure represented by the general formula (1) [wherein, R1, R2 and R3 are each independently a group of formulas (2), (3), (4) or (5), or H, with the proviso that at least one thereof is not H, and concretely, R4 to R12 and M1 to M7 are represented as follows: R4 is H, CH3, CH2OH or OH; R5 is H, CH3, CH2OH, OH, CH2COOM4; R6, R9 and R10 are each independently an organic group having at least one functional group selected from a carboxyl group, a hydroxy group, an amide group, an amino group, a thiol group and a sulfonic acid group; R7 is H, CH3 or CH2COOM5, R8 is H or CH3; R11 is COOM6, SO3M7, CHO, CN or COR12; R12 is CH3 or CH2CH3; and M1 to M7 are each independently H, NH4, an alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal].
