PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic disk having high hardness and low coefficient of friction and a magnetic recording method which uses a floppy (R) disk. SOLUTION: In the magnetic disk produced by laminating a magnetic film, protective film and lubricant film on at least one surface of a flexible nonmagnetic supporting body, the protective film consists of a carbon film containing hydrogen, nitrogen and rare gas elements and has 0.5 to 8.0 atomic % nitrogen content and 0.5 to 1.2 atomic % content of rare gas elements. In the magnetic recording method which uses a floppy disk, magnetic signals are recorded and reproduced in a floppy disk device equipped with a head or a slider having a carbon protective film on its surface.
