PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a picture free from noise from a set position by simply setting the read starting position of a picture reader at a free position without erroneously recognizing the shadow of the edge of a paper. SOLUTION: An adjusting paper whose surface is entirely white is read from a standard original setting position, and the starting position and the finishing position of the shadow of the picture are stored in a nonvolatile memory. Next, the adjusting paper 11 added with a position mark 3 is read and based on the reading signal of an area over the stored finishing position among its reading signals, the reading starting position is set. The reading starting position is automatically set without being set erroneously by the signal of the shadow. On reading the original, white dummy data are sent to an area equivalent to an area between the starting position and the finishing position stored in the nonvolatile memory to replace the reading data of an area corresponding to the shadow part with white data.
