PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image read and record device rotating a document carrier roller and a record paper carrier roller by a single drive motor by a simple constitution according to an operation mode. SOLUTION: A facsimile device 1 is so formed that a motor pinion 11 is clockwise rotated by the single drive motor in changing a mode, a read-side first idler gear 13 and a write-side first idler gear 18 are rotated via a reduction gear 12, the read-side swing plate 15 is clockwise swung so that a read-side swing gear 14 is engaged with a mode switch gear 23, and a write-side swing plate 20 is clockwise swung so that the write side first idler gear 19 is separated from a write-side second idler gear 21. The mode switch gear 23 is clockwise rotated by the read-side swing gear 14 and a cam 26 is clockwise rotated so as to turn on/off a mode detection sensor 24. A control part judges the present operation mode based on the on/off detection results of the mode detection sensor 24 and the number of rotation steps of the drive motor so as to control the operation mode.
