The invention relates to a method for the production of polyhydroxymethyl compounds of formula (I), where R, independently = a further hydroxymethyl, 1 - 22 C alkyl group or a 6 - 22 C aryl or aralkyl group, by condensation of aldehydes with 2 to 24 C atoms in an aldol reaction with formaldehyde, using tertiary amines as catalyst to give alkanals of formula (II), where R has the meanings above and subsequent hydrogenation thereof. According to the invention, the formation of by-products is reduced and the yield of desired polyols increased, whereby the above aldol reaction is carried out using an aqueous formaldehyde solution with a methanol content of < 0.3 and preferably < 0,1 wt. %. |
