PURPOSE: A method for performing a signal path setting and an automatic protection switching of an optical subscriber transmission system is provided to multiplex or demultiplex signal paths in entire systems within an identical network, so as to efficiently use bandwidths of the signal paths, and to supply various services. CONSTITUTION: An optical subscriber transmission system sets up a subscriber service path(ST11), and discriminates path kinds(ST12). If the path kind is an existing service path, the system checks a state of the existing subscriber service path(ST13), and performs an automatic protection switching function(ST16), according to a fail generation and a switching request(ST14,ST15), then changes the path state(ST16). If the path kind is a new service path, the system periodically checks a fail state of the new service path(ST17), performs the automatic protection switching function by a communication channel using an overhead of an STM-n(Synchronous Transfer Mode-n) signal, and changes the path state(ST21).
