PURPOSE: A method for converting a response mode of an ARS(Automatic Response System) is provided to allow a voice message to be recorded even during speech, according to the request of a pager. CONSTITUTION: A main response message and a private response are recorded in a main memory(14A) of an automatic response unit(14). An absent mode setup state of a user detected through a key input unit(10) is stored in a supplemental memory(13). If a ring signal is detected, whether users are absent is checked based on the stored absent mode setup state. If absent, a mode is converted into a message recording mode. If all users are not absent, a bell is ringing. If a predetermined button input signal is detected from the key input unit(10) during speech, a mode is converted into a message recording mode.
