PURPOSE: A piston ring formed by a high-carbon carburized layer on the sliding surface of a piston ring is provided, which has excellent abrasion resistance and burning resistance as compared to piston rings formed by conventional chrome plating layers. CONSTITUTION: This piston ring(16) is characterized in that it is formed by a high-carbon carburized layer(18) having a carbide content of 25 to 35% by weight on the outer surface of alloy steel comprising 0.01 to 0.4% by weight of C, below 0.5% by weigh of Si, 0.3 to 1.5% by weight of Mn, 2 to 5% by weight of Cr, 0.3 to 2.0% by weight of Mo, 0.1 to 0.5% by weight of V and the remainder being Fe.
