PURPOSE: An impurity removal device and a method thereof are provided to control the opening and shut-off of a valve by detecting the amount of water in a fuel tank via a capacitance sensor. CONSTITUTION: A capacitance sensor(12) is installed at the bottom of a fuel tank(18), and an ECU(Electronic Control Unit)(16) decides detecting periods of water or air and oil via the capacitance sensor. If the ECU decides a water collection detecting period as an electrical signal, the ECU lights on an alarm lamp(22) on a dashboard to let a driver recognize the existence of the water. The ECU operates an actuator(14) to drain the water in the fuel tank until a period of air and oil is detected. Therefore, impurities in the fuel tank are promptly removed. Further, the durability of an engine is improved while exhaust gas is reduced.
