PURPOSE: Provided is a purifying agent which shows an excellent purification property and produces no unstable product after purification in a method for purifying harmful gas containing an alkyl metal hydrogen compound as an harmful component. Also, a purification method using the agent is provided. CONSTITUTION: An one-component purifying agent containing copper (II) oxide at least 10 m2/g in BET specific surface area as an active ingredient, or a two-component purifying agent containing copper (II) oxide at least 10 m2/g in BET specific surface area and manganese dioxide at least 130 m2/g in BET specific surface area in a weight ratio of 1/0.3 or below as active ingredient is used for the purification of harmful gas containing an alkyl metal hydrogen compound as an harmful component represented by formula:Rm-M-Hn (wherein R is an alkyl; M is As, P, S, Se or Te; m and n are integers the sum of which is equal to the valence of M).
