PURPOSE: An automobile and operating method thereof is provided to appropriately adjust the change gear ratio in a transmission without operating a vehicle brake, without requiring the brake operation, in the predetermined operating condition. CONSTITUTION: An automobile has a drive motor and a gearbox with a device for altering the gear ratio, a controller, a changeover device with at least one drive setting and a neutral setting and a vehicle brake. Simultaneous operation of the vehicle brake and changeover device is required to set the corresponding gear ratio, but this requirement is lifted when the changeover device has been in neutral for less than a defined period of about 1 to 2 seconds. No ratio is selected in the gearbox when the changeover device is in its neutral setting. The changeover device changes from neutral to a drive setting to change the gearbox to a corresponding gear ratio.
