PURPOSE: A friction transmission device having a simple planetary roller mechanism and a braking mechanism is provided to connect a braking mechanism of optimum capacity, to secure dependable braking capability and to attempt sharp cost-down. CONSTITUTION: A friction transmission device(20) consists of a simple planetary roller mechanism(28) having a sun roller(30), a planetary roller(34) and a ring roller(36) as friction rollers, and a braking mechanism(22). A test torque is gradually increased and input in the sun roller under the state where a static friction torque(Y) that can be taken out by the braking mechanism, a carrier(32) and the ring roller are fixed. The test torque value(Xd) where the first sliding rotation is caused in any of the friction rollers is set in the scope of 0.1Xd<Y<0.7Xd. Hence, the balance in performance between the simple planetary roller mechanism and the braking mechanism can be maintained.
