PURPOSE: A preventing method for overheat of a catalyst in a vehicle is provided to prevent damage on the catalyst through optimizing a catalyst protecting operation timing by using amount and temperature of exhaust gas and ignition time. CONSTITUTION: An intake air amount, an engine RPM(Revolutions Per Minute), a knocking, a temperature of cooling water are received in traveling for deciding a traveling condition. A heat transfer amount shift(Q) is initialized for zero. In case of the traveling condition decided to be a catalyst overheat preventive condition, a THD_Q is established according to the traveling condition. Then, compensating values for the traveling condition and the ignition timing are calculated. After calculating a heat transfer amount(Qn), the overheat of the catalyst is decided by using the heat transfer amount and the THD_Q. In case of overheated state of the catalyst, a fuel injection control signal is outputted.
